'파라다이스 작가' 리정

리정 작가의 자연주의를 표방한 파라다이스 아이콘은 인류가 풀어야 할 세계적인 환경파괴의 심각성을 역설적으로 고발하고, 인류를 상징하는 문명발달의 부산물들이 완벽하게 배제된 그 자체로 순환하는 원초적 생태계를 보전 및 회귀하자는 계몽적 언어를 담아내고 있다. 자연 세계, 예술과 문명, 고대문자, 무역 및 발굴, 고고학의 탄생, 세계의 분류, 의식과 종교 등 일곱 가지 학문이 주축이 된 계몽주의(Enlightenment)를 상기시킨다. 작품 속에 등장하는 자연을 관장하는 여신은 곧 인류를 상징화한 것으로, 21세기 패션 아이콘으로 표현하여 장식미술을 의도화했다. 작품에 많이 등장하는 초식동물은 아프리카 사바나에 서식하는 얼룩말과 순수한 백마와 사슴, 순록, 코끼리, 산양 등과 평화를 상징하는 많은 새가 등장하는데, 작품에 표면화된 각각의 다른 습성을 지닌 동물들은 종은 다르지만 서로 배려하고 협력하면서 평화롭게 자연환경을 공유하고 유지한다. 맹수들 또한 초식동물들과 함께 등장하지만, 리정 작가의 작품에서의 맹수들은 상징적으로 평화와 균형을 수호하는 선량한 수호자의 역할을 맡으며, 초식동물들과 함께 공존한다. 작품에 표면화된 각각의 동물들은 종류가 다르지만 서로 배려하고 협력하면서 작품 속에서 평화를 공유한다. 작품 속 배경으로는 먼 평원과 뭉게구름, 변화가 돋보이는 하늘과 숲, 설산 등 사계절의 아름다운 풍경이 펼쳐져 있는데, 이는 낙원에서 이룬 이상향적인 모습이 영원히 지속되었으면 하는 절실한 열망에서 비롯되었다. 인류와 동물, 자연이 모두 하나의 작품 안에서 조화를 이루며 만들어낸 영원한 낙원 <Paradise>는 리정 작가가 지향하는 이상향을 인류에게 끊임없이 선보이는 과정이자, 함께 이상향으로 나아가고자 하는 꾸준한 설득의 메시지이다. 자연주의의 <파라다이스> 연작 작품을 통하여 우리 사회가 지향해야 할 능동적 대처를 부르짖거나 더욱 강력한 환경 윤리적 행동 이행만이 보전된다는 교훈을 세상에 던지는 비주얼 언어를 함축하고 있다. 자연주의는 민족주의와 지역주의적 정서를 표현한 현대미술의 첫 번째 운동 중 하나이며, 사실주의적 이데올로기와 낭만주의적인 풍경화의 기법과 효과를 융합시키는 시각에 눈을 뜨듯 자연주의 표방하는 리정 작가에게 있어서도 센스있는 전개를 엿볼 수 있다. 대자연의 섭리에 의한 존재하는 생태계를 역행하는 만물의 영장 인류의 아집에 의한 환경파괴는 특혜가 될 수 없으며, 미래 세대를 고려해야 할 환경윤리를 망각하는 인류가 서서히 자멸하고 있음을 일깨워 주는 계기의 인류 각성제(awakening)가 되기를 기대한다.

Rhyjung's naturalistic paradise icons paradoxically denounce the severity of global environmental degradation that mankind must address, and embody the Enlightenment's language of preserving and returning to a primordial, self-circulating ecosystem completely free of the byproducts of civilization's development that symbolize humanity. It recalls the Enlightenment, which was centered on seven disciplines: the natural world, art and civilization, ancient writing, trade and excavation, the birth of archaeology, the classification of the world, and ritual and religion. The goddesses presiding over nature in the work symbolize humanity and are intended to be represented as 21st century fashion icons, making them decorative art. The herbivores featured in the work are the zebras and pure white horses of the African savannah, as well as deer, reindeer, elephants, mountain goats, and many birds that symbolize peace. Despite their different habits, these animals share and maintain the natural environment peacefully, caring and cooperating with each other. Birds of prey also appear alongside herbivores, but in Rhyjung's work, they coexist alongside herbivores, symbolically acting as benevolent guardians of peace and balance. Although each of the animals depicted in the work are of different species, they are caring and cooperative with each other, sharing the peace in the work. The beautiful scenery of the four seasons, including distant plains, puffy clouds, changing skies, forests, and snowy mountains, is the backdrop for the work, which is inspired by the artist's desire for the idealized state of paradise to last forever. Paradise, an eternal paradise where humans, animals, and nature are all harmonized in one work of art, is the process of Rhyjung's constant presentation of the ideal world to mankind, and a message of persuasion to move toward it together. Through the naturalistic “Paradise” series of works, the visual language of the artist implies a call for proactive measures that our society should aim for, or a lesson to the world that only a stronger implementation of environmental and ethical behavior will preserve it. Naturalism was one of the first movements in modern art to express nationalist and regionalist sentiments, and Rhyjung's work is an eye-opening look at the fusion of realist ideology with the techniques and effects of romantic landscape painting. The destruction of the environment by humanity's arrogance, the warrant of all things, which goes against the existing ecosystem by the providence of Mother Nature, cannot be a privilege, and we hope that it will serve as a wake-up call for humanity to realize that humanity is slowly destroying itself by forgetting the environmental ethics that should consider future generations.
